What are Nightjet sleeper trains like? How to book them?

ÖBB Nightjet | How to Book Train Tickets

Nightjet trains are the main sleeper trains in western Europe. Find out on this page what Nightjet trains are like and what the different classes of travel are.

  • You can book all ÖBB Nightjets through our European rail planner
  • You can also book Eurail passes + ÖBB Nightjet seat/couchette/sleeper reservations via our Rail Planner. For an overview please see Sleeper trains - Eurail Reservations
  • As of 2025 New Nightjet trains are introduced on some routes, while other routes retain Classic Nightjet trains.
    • We'll show you the difference on this page. Both types are comfortable to travel on and to have a relaxed night's sleep.

Couchettes 4-6 berth

Couchettes are the basic and budget-friendly sleeping accommodation on Nightjet trains. A Couchette compartment features 4 or 6 beds, and can either be booked privately or per individual bed.

  • Sheets, blankets, and pillows are included.
  • At least one female-only compartment is available on every train.
  • Includes a bottle of mineral water and a small breakfast (coffee/tea/pastry).
  • A shared washroom and toilet are available in the corridor.
  • Classic Nightjet: power sockets are available, but no wifi. On New Nightjet both are available at every bed.
  • Private means private: if you book a private compartment with 6 beds for 2 travelers, it truly remains private (the other 4 beds will not be made up).

Mini cabins (only on New Nightjet connections)

Mini Cabins are made for one person and only feature on New Nighjet trains (see the route table above for which routes these trains are available on).

  • Sheets, blankets, and pillows are included.
  • Includes a bottle of mineral water and a small breakfast (coffee/tea/pastry).
  • A shared washroom and toilet are available in the corridor.
  • Every one-person cabin has it's own light and climate control.
  • Every cabin has dedicated secure luggage storage space and a table that can be folded away during the night.
  • Every two mini cabins next to each other share a small door that can be opened in case they are booked together.
  • Wifi and power sockets are available in every cabin.

Sleeping cabins 1, 2, or 3

Sleep 1, 2 or 3 cabins are the most comfortable sleeping cabins available on Nightjet trains. These can be booked privately (for 1, 2 or 3 persons) or an individual bed in a 2 or 3 person compartment can be booked.

  • Seats available until bedtime, then the beds are folded up.
  • Bunk beds with real mattresses.
  • Includes a welcome drink, toiletries, and breakfast.
  • All compartments have their own sink.
  • Bedding and towels are provided.
  • Classic Nightjet: power sockets are available, but no wifi. On New Nightjet both are available at every bed.

Some differences between New and Classic Sleep cabins:

  • Classic Nightjet: Regular sleep 1,2 or 3 cabins only have a washbasin, with a shared shower and toilet in the corridor. Only 'Deluxe' sleep cabins have an ensuite shower and toilet. Power sockets available in every cabin, no wifi available.
  • New Nightjet: All sleep 1,2 or 3 cabins have an ensuite shower and toilet. Power sockets and free wifi available at every bed.

Seating

The most basic and cheapest form of accommodation on Nightjet trains are second-class seats. No first class seats are available. No breakfast is included.

  • Classic Nightjet: Seats in compartments for 6 people with an aisle, lockable with a door. The seats are adjustable and can lie almost flat. Seats can be booked individually, or a 6-person compartment can be booked privately (private means private). The light in the cabin can be dimmed. No wifi is available.
  • New Nightjet: comfortable seats in a 2+2 arrangement in an open-plan coach. Seats can only be booked individually, and have a limited amount of recline. The light will be dimmed slightly automatically, but cannot be fully dimmed. Free wifi and power sockets are available.
