Up to what size can my car be for the motorail?

The size of the car that can be taken on the motorail varies from carrier to carrier. It is important to measure your car accurately before taking your car on the train. Also, the exact dimensions of your car can often be found online in the specifications of your car.

The following maximum dimensions apply to DB and ÖBB car-sleeping trains:

  • Up to a height of 158 cm the car may be up to 200 cm wide;
  • From a height of 159 cm to 196 cm the width may be 155 cm;
  • From a height of 197 cm to 205 cm, the maximum width may be 135 cm.
Note: Car roofs are rounded, so the roof is often less wide than the rest of the car. It's therefore not the case that if your car is 200 cm high, the whole car may only be 135 cm. Only the part from 197 cm may not be larger than 135 cm.

For car trains to Italy and Croatia other maximum dimensions apply:

  • Up to a height of 158 cm the car may not be wider than 200 cm;
  • From a height of 159 cm to 160 cm, the width may be 155 cm;
  • From a height of 161 cm to 167 cm, the maximum width may be 135 cm.
For Finland, different sizes also apply for the car sleeper trains:
  • Up to a height of 184 cm, the car may be a maximum of 220 cm wide;
  • From a height of 185 cm to 204 cm, the car may be no wider than 164 cm;
  • The car may not be longer than 500, 1000 or 1500 cm;
  • The maximum weight may be 3000 kg. In addition, the axle or axle assembly may not weigh more than 2000 kg;
  • The required height of the tires is 15 cm, in order to properly connect the rolling resistance.

From a height of 185 cm, the car can only be placed on the upper part of the car train.
