Luggage restrictions on European trains
European trains generally have no luggage restrictions, except that you must be able to carry your luggage onto the train by yourself (maximum of 3 pieces per person). We recommend limiting the amount of luggage you take, to make boarding easier, and to always keep an eye on your luggage.
There are several exceptions where a luggage restriction is enforced:
- TGV and Eurostar high-speed trains have a luggage restriction, although this is very generous as of 2025: one item of hand luggage plus a maximum of two large suitcases. Please note that on TGV and Eurostar trains your luggage must be labeled with your name and adress. THe onboard staff can provide you with labels.
- Low-cost carriers like Ouigo, Avlo and Flixtrain do allow a limited amount of luggage to be taken on board, as well as maximum dimensions. You may need to pay extra for additional pieces of luggage.
- Please see your carrier's ticket and their website for more information, or check the train type on the pages Trains in Spain (for Ouigo Spain and Avlo) and Trains in France (for Ouigo France).
Luggage check-in on European trains
You do not need to check in your luggage on most European trains. Simply carry your luggage onto the train and store it yourself in a luggage rack where space is available. There are a few exceptions to this:
- In Spain your luggage does need to be checked in on high-speed train services. You therefore need to arrive 30 minutes in advance at the train station, unless a different time is specifically stated on your ticket or in the information package of your Rail Tour. Please note that you must still carry the luggage to the train by yourself.
- On Eurostar services to and from London, you will need to go through security before boarding, which includes a check of your luggage. Please follow the advised check-in time and luggage restrictions as stated on your ticket. as this differs depending on the class in which you travel.
- On low-cost carriers like Avlo and Ouigo, although there might not be a traditional check-in, your luggage will be measured to the maximum dimensions you are allowed to take. Please check your ticket for when you are required to be at the platform.

Luggage storage on European trains
European trains almost always have luggage racks above the seats, as well as space under the seats.

Most long-distance and high-speed trains also have separate luggage racks next to the seats.
