Can I travel by train with a wheelchair of mobility scooter?
Travel with a wheelchair and mobility scooter is possible in (almost) all international trains. Train companies almost always offer the following:
- Special wheelchair seat;
- A special fare for both the person in the wheelchair and any accompanying person;
- Boarding assistance/assistance (Please note: request this from the operating company at least 1 week before departure).
The exact prices and conditions differ from one airline to another.
In our selection of city trips and tours, many hotels have an elevator, but unfortunately this is not the case for all hotels. In our city trips it's always indicated if there is an elevator available. Some hotels also have special wheelchair rooms available.
Unfortunately, many operators have not yet automated the reservation of wheelchair spaces and companion tickets in their systems. This remains manual work, which is why we cannot offer wheelchair seat reservations at this time. However, we've made a short overview of the possibilities per carrier:
Austria -
ÖBB
- The weight of wheelchairs and mobility scooters may not exceed 250 kg. The size may not exceed 70 x 120 cm.
- Seats are located in both 1st and 2nd class.
- On selected NightJets, a special, more spacious sleeping compartment is available for wheelchair users. You can request this via the form on the website of the operator.
France -
Thalys
- Wheelchairs must not exceed 75 x 125 cm and 300 kg. These may only be manually or electrically operated wheelchairs with a turning radius of no more than 150 cm.
- All Thalys trains have one wheelchair space available in the Premium compartment.
- An accompanying person, with a companion card, can travel at the same fare as the person in the wheelchair.
France -
TGV
- The maximum permitted size of wheelchairs and mobility scooters is 70 x 120. They may also be electric.
- In TGV INOUI trains there are two seats in 1st class.
Germany -
Deutsche Bahn
- The wheelchair maximum size is 70 x 125 cm (including space for the feet).
- In all ICEs there are 2 to 4 wheelchair spaces in 2nd class near adapted toilets.
- For travel with a mobility scooter, please contact the operator.
Great Britain - Eurostar
- Fuel wheelchairs or mobility scooters aren't allowed. Other wheelchairs may be a maximum of 70 x 100 cm.
- Scootmobiles must be reported to the operator before departure. These will be transported separately in the luggage compartment.
- All Eurostar trains have two wheelchair spaces in 1st class.
- A companion, with a companion card, can travel along at the same fare as the person in the wheelchair.
Great Britain -
British Railways & others
- Almost all trains can accommodate 70 x 120 cm wheelchairs.
- In some outdated trains, the maximum width of wheelchairs may be as small as 55cm.
- Mobility scooters cannot be used on all trains. Please check with the operator.
Ireland -
Iarnród Éireann
- Wheelchair users are also more than welcome at Iarnród Éireann. They will gladly help you personally with more information. You can contact the company for this.
Italy -
Italo
- The wheelchair may not be larger than 70 x 120 cm. The maximum weight is 200 kg.
- There are two wheelchair spaces available in high-speed trains. These are located in carriage 8 or carriage 3.
- Adapted WCs can be found near the wheelchair spaces.
Italy -
Trenitalia
- The wheelchair may not be larger than 70 x 120 cm. The maximum weight is 200 kg.
Netherlands -
NS Intercity Brussels
- The outside dimensions of the wheelchair/scooter cannot exceed a maximum of 150 x 85 cm. Also, the maximum weight may be 250 kg.
- The accompanying person can obtain a free ticket from the Ticket & Service desk.
- The wheelchair space is (usually) located in the middle of the train.
Norway -
VY
- Wheelchairs may not be larger than 70 x 120 cm and the maximum weight is 250 kg.
- On the famous railroad between Oslo and Bergen, wheelchairs can only be a maximum of 63 x 120 cm, as the train on this route is somewhat outdated.
- Motorized wheelchairs must meet Norwegian wheelchair requirements to be allowed on trains.
Portugal -
CP
- Wheelchair users receive a discount of up to 75% of the ticket price. Accompanying persons can receive a discount of up to 25%.
Spain -
Renfe
- AVE trains are rich with 2 wheelchair spaces in 2nd class. These are located in carriage 8.
- Specially equipped toilets are available.
Sweden -
SJ
- The maximum dimensions of wheelchairs and mobility scooters depend on the type of train:
- SJ 3000 (X55), TiB (Regina) & Vänertåg (Regina): 75 x 125 cm for wheelchairs, 70 x 125 cm. Max 300 kg.
- X 2000, Double-decker trains (X40): 70 x 115 cm for wheelchairs, 55 x 105 cm for mobility scooters. Max 300 kg.
- Locomotive trains, SJ Night train, TiB (X12): 84 x 67 cm for wheelchairs, mobility scooters are not allowed. Max 300 kg.
- Unfortunately, wheelchair and/or mobility scooter users cannot travel on SJ Euronight trains due to lack of space.
- If you use a wheelchair space, it's unfortunately not possible to bring pets as well, as wheelchair spaces and pet compartments are located in different carriages.
Switzerland -
SBB
- SBB trains have at least two wheelchair seats with adapted toilets nearby, usually in 1st class.
- Many trains are built at boarding height so that persons in wheelchairs can easily enter the train. However, not all stations have an elevator. Please check with the operator before departure.
- A mobile elevator is used for boarding assistance and you should arrive 10 minutes before departure. This assistance must be booked in advance with the operator.
- The wheelchair may not exceed 70 x 125 cm in size and 320 kg in weight.
